Good Study Habits

At the start of a semester, many students often find it hard to begin studying. A good way is to start doing your study in short periods of 15-30 minutes daily for the first two weeks.

Once you make it part of your normal daily routine, you then expand the study period until you have a full-blown session of two hours. The trick is to do it in small incremental steps so that you transform your studying activity into something habitual that you do without much effort.

After habitualising yourself into a study routine, stick to this two-hour study block, with a 10-minute break every half hour.

During the 10 minutes break, get away from the study room or library or wherever you have been studying, and do something that is both relaxing and different, such as going out of the building or getting a drink of water.

Also, make sure that you end the two-hour session regardless of whether you have completed what you have been studying or not. Then, promise to return to that point in the next two-hour session which could be later in the day or the next day.

In between each two-hour block, do something you enjoy or something new and refreshing. This is to prevent your mind from perceiving studying as mundane and unappealing.

At first it may seem a little hard to think of things that you don't normally do and might enjoy. Here are some examples of doing something other than studying: walk, cycle to the park, watch a DVD movie, visit the museum, meet friends for tea (but preferably not talking about study), learn to play a musical instrument, read a short novel, and so on.
